Pearls from the Author

Even though this dish gives us the feeling of cultural Chinese food, it is actually an American-Chinese fast food creation. It was developed by Chef Andy Kho in 1987 while he was an executive chef in Panda Express. He explained that when he came up with the recipe, he was inspired by the flavours of the Hunan Province in China. He is also the creator of one of the most famous Chinese dishes, General Tso Chicken. They are similar to the classic sweet and sour dishes of China, but Americanized. Since the time these recipes were born, they have created a foodie sensation. Especially the orange chicken recipe is widely famous and now you can find many simplified homemade recipes online. You can find more information about orange chicken here.

I would recommend serving this dish next to a simple side dish with rice for a more accurate meal composition. You can find an appropriate rice pilaf recipe here.

    For Chicken
  • Cut the chicken breasts into cubes.
  • Mix the panko (or bread crumbs), flour and salt in a bowl. Scramble the eggs in a separate bowl.
  • Dip the chicken cubes into the egg, and then roll them inside the flour mixture until they are covered. Place the ready chicken cubes onto an oven tray which you covered with baking paper beforehand.
  • Preheat the oven to 200 degrees (fan mode on). Bake the chicken for 10 minutes. Then flip the cubes, bake them for 10 more minutes. This way they are going to be evenly baked.
  • Take the cubes out from the oven and let them cool down on the counter while you prepare the sauce.
  • For the Orange Sauce
  • Pour the orange juice, vinegar and soy sauce into a large pan. Add the sugar, orange zest, garlic and chilli sauce on top. Start heating up the sauce.
  • Mix regularly until it starts to boil. When it boils, dissolve the starch in the water first then pour this mixture into the sauce. Keep mixing for 30 seconds.
  • Add the chicken cubes on top and keep stirring until the sauce thickens. Add the sesame seeds and give them a good mix.
  • Take the orange chicken from the burner and transfer it into the serving dish.
  • Garnish it with chopped green onions. It is ready to be served.
  • Bon appetit!
